3639.0. "Can't read tape" by FORTY2::JONES (Neil) Wed Jan 29 1997 11:02
Hi,
I have two UNIX systems:
A: Flamingo with built in tape drive running UNIX V4.0 (have also tried
UNIX 3.2C)
B: AlphaStation 255 running UNIX 3.2G with TLZ04
The tape drive on B appears to be working ok. I can do a tar cv
to make a tape and I can read it on machine A.
Now if I make a tape on machine A, machine B cannot read it!
If I do tar cv on machine A it says the blocksize is 20 (the default).
However when I try to read the tape on machine B it says the tape is
not a tar archive and the blocksize is 5!!!
Ok, I'll write the tape on machine A with a blocksize of 5. But
machine B thinks this now has a blocksize of 128.
Anybody got any idea what's going on?
Thanks
Neil

| What's the tape in the Flamingo? It's probably a TLZ06 or TLZ07. Have
you checked that the writing being done on the Flamingo isn't being
done in compressed format? The TLZ04 can't read compressed data.
