Just to close the book on this the answer turned out to be a "feature"
of the HSJ40 in that it does not allow READ REVERSE to take place.

Most SCSI tapes won't do Read Reverse either - It's pretty much a 9
track drive only function.
Best not to use Read Reverse.... It usually won't work.
