These aren't so much my personal favorites, as my sense of consensus
  favorites...

Miles Davis's In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Live-Evil, Tribute to Jack
      Johnson
John McLaughlin's Inner Mountling Flame, Birds of Fire
    Herbie Hancock's Headhunters
Chick Corea's Light as a Feather, Hymn of the 7th Galaxy, Where Have I
      Known You Before
Weather Report's I Sing the Body Electric, Mysterious Traveler

Those are all jazz/rock fusion; for jazz/funk probably start with...

Ornette Coleman's Dancing in Your Head, Virgin Beauty
    James Blood Ulmer's Odyssey
Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages (not sure if this is really a consensus
      fave)

My own favorites would be a subset of these. - Jay

yes, thanks for your list, headhunters is in fact by Herbie Hancock
not Chick Corea, I goof on that entry in .6

there are some late 60's and early 70's albums by Quincy Jones that
I like to, I consider that was his prime period.

please let us know if you come across any outstanding fusion albums.
