Is there any software (prefer shareware) that lets you edit/cut .avi
and .mov files? Like, cut and splice?

Yup, PP7 is quite handy at slicing and dicing video - as long as you
don't mind the audio track getting lost along the way...
Not sure I understand why it happens, but PP7 even warns me that "the
file length has changed and the audio synchronization will be lost" (or
words to that effect)...

"Personal AVI Editor" does this for AVI files (only). I do not have it.
It is limited to 30 days use. An Alta Vista Search should throw up a
variety of locations.
