457.36 NT 4.0 on Alpha ???? FIREBL::LEEDSFrom VAXinated to AlphaholicWed Feb 26 1997 20:0419
Trayquote runs fine on my Intel PC with Windows 95..... however, it
won't even try to install on my AlphaStation running NT 4.0 (with FX!32).

When I start "setup", I get a window full of garbage characters, then a
message box that says:

"the dynamic link library MSVCRT40.DLL could not be found in the specified
  path C:\winnt.......

C:\WINNT\MSVCRTV40.DLL is not at Intel image. It appears to be an Alpha
  image"

Then after clicking on okay a few times, install terminates.

Is there any way to get it to run in this environment ??

Thanks

Arlan
457.37Hmmm...TMCUKA::ROWELLPaul Rowell @BBPThu Feb 27 1997 12:2512
Are you using the Install x86 application?

Did you unzip the kit or are you trying to get the self-extracting
archive to explode - it doesn't work!

I have it working fine on an AlphaServer here.

Someone did report a problem with an image being missing from their
system because they didn't have Office installed, I think I put a note
    in the Readme?

Just checking, you are using the latest version, as this was a problem
    with an earlier release.

Also the ActiveX control is called UDPPOR32.OCX but I assume this was
    just a typo.

Mike,
I had a similar problem running on an ALPHA. I determined that it was a
missing MFCANS32.DLL file. Do you get an error about a missing file if you
execute UDPPOR32.OCX?

The following was added to the readme file as a result of the problems I
had. I suspect that this may relevant to X86 systems as well.

<- Trayquote will run on Alpha NT V4.0 if FX32! is installed, one user of the
<previous version reported a problem with installation because a file,
<MFCANS32.DLL, didn't exist. As this was the only case I decided not to include
<the installation of this file by default but to provide it within the kit for
<manual installation if needed. It should go in \WINNT\SYS32X86.

I just double-click on "setup" from the TQV2 kit...

Tried both - they both extract fine, I get all the files I need, but trying
to run setup after the extract I get the garbage errors and Intel image
messages.

Saw the note, but that's not the problem I'm having... I wish I could
show you the setup window I get - it's two lines full of things that look
like they should be words, but instead of letters a-z, it's made up of
symbols like a telephone, squares, arrows, diamonds, etc. Then I get the
error window about msvcrt.dll not being an Intel image....

457.43fixed, but don't know why ...FIREBL::LEEDSFrom VAXinated to AlphaholicFri Feb 28 1997 14:0114
I found msvcrt40.dll on my system 4 times:

 C:\fx32\msvcrt40.dll size=607kb - Alpha image
 C:\WINNT\msvcrt40.dll size=567kb - Alpha image
 C:\WINNT\sys32x86\msvcrt40.dll size= 64kb (???) Intel image
 C:\WINNT\system32\msvcrt40.dll size=607kb - Alpha image

I copied the original Intel image (C:\WINNT\sys32x86\msvcrt40.dll) to
C:\WINNT\msvcrt40.dll and trayquote installed, even though the setup
window was full of the garbage symbol characters.... looks like an FX!32
issue since FX!32 had translated msvcrt40.dll to become an Alpha image.

Arlan
457.44It seemed to install and work fine with FX!32TALLIS::JACFri Feb 28 1997 18:2910
FX!32 doesn't translate images in place. i.e. FX!32 did not change
the installed msvcrt40.dll from an X86 dll to an Alpha dll.
It's not clear why you would have an msvcrt40.dll in your windows
directory in any case.

I installed trayquote using FX!32 V1.1 and didn't have any 'funny
characters' display on the screen. The icon seemed to work fine,
reporting the unhappy news that the DJIA closed down 47.33.

Something else you installed put an Alpha copy of MSVCRT40.DLL into
\WINNT (which is the wrong location for that file).

In any case, from the MSDN, the default order in which DLLs are searched for:

>1.	The directory from which the application loaded.
You didn't install it into the \WINNT directory did you?

>2.	The current directory.
Are you running it from the \WINNT directory?

In any case there shouldn't be an MSVCRT40.DLL int \WINNT *and* (as Jim stated)
FX!32 doesn't ever replace an x86 image with an Alpha image.
