| When I run FutureSaver and look at the detailed results, I notice that
the first year of retirement shows a huge expenditure for income tax
(about $25K). The next and subsequent years it drops way down to about
$5K. Has anyone else noticed this? Any explainations?
Thx,
Dave

| I haven't run FundSaver, but I assume you work part of the first
calendar year of retirement, so your income that year is higher
than subsequent years.

re:.16
I have noticed the same thing. My explanation (really a guess) is that
future$aver does its tax figuring 1 year in arrears to make computation
easier (that is, the tax paid in any given year is the tax on the PREVIOUS
years' income). For the purposes of future$aver estimates, it doesn't make
much difference *except* in the first year of retirement when your taxable
income may be significantly lower than the previous year.
I consider this a bug in future$saver. To compensate you could give
yourself a one time bonus under "Additional Resources" (however, I chose to
ignore it and figure that I would just have a little extra cushion for
unforseen expenses).
By the way, I found one other deficiency in future$saver. All your non-
tax-sheltered investments (called "Personal Savings") are assumed to have
no tax liability. However, we all know that capital gains taxes do exist
and can be significant. My suggestion is to reduce your expected return
on those investments by about 1/4 to cover the taxes (more or less, depending
on your tax bracket).
