2173.2 | terrier grooming | BSS::MONTVILLE | Sharon Montville | Tue Mar 11 1997 11:17 | 12 |
| I'm not a terrier expert - BUT I think most of the terrier breeds
require quite a bit of expert grooming, in order to look that certain
way (Like you would see in a book of dog breeds). There is a technique
called "hand stripping" (or something like that) that needs to be done.
I know I was amazed when I found out that what I thought was a
"natural" look, was in fact the result of a lot of hard work!
You could probably have a cairn terrier and not have it groomed the
"official" way - hopefully someone else can shed some more light on
this.

| Sharon,
If you aren't showing, you can use clippers to approximate the
"stripped" look.

2173.4 | Jack Russel Terrier | CX3PST::CSC32::CBUTTERWORTH | Give Me Wings... | Tue Mar 11 1997 12:25 | 8 |
| How about a Jack Russel terrier? If you get one of the short haired
ones they don't require any grooming - at least no coat trimming.
They come in packages of about 8 lbs or so. :-) Adorable dogs!
I want to have one someday - lots of friends have had them and
love them. We've got 5 big ones right now so I can't - he'd get
squashed in the stampede. ;-)

2173.5 | How about a mutt? | BUNKA::LEMEN | | Wed Mar 12 1997 15:46 | 3 |
| There are many short-haired mixed breeds that require very little grooming.
My parents' dog, Tuffy, was part beagle/terrier/hound. He was an adorable
dog, never weighed more than 30 lbs, and could be combed in under a minute.

2173.6 | Is 2 hours a year too much? | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Think softly | Fri Mar 14 1997 15:07 | 5 |
| Actually, Cairns don't need a lot of grooming. Since they don't shed
like most dogs do, they have to be stripped to help them shed their
dead coat. We usually spend about 1.5 - 2 hours on spring grooming and
maybe 1 hour at another time of year. See note 219 for more info on
Cairns. I wrote a couple notes on grooming techniques in that topic.

2173.7 | Which part of the country? | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Think softly | Fri Mar 14 1997 15:13 | 9 |
| As for rescue options, if you're in the Seattle area, contact me or my
wife(also at Digital). We do local Cairn rescue with Seattle Purebred
Dog Rescue.
If you're in another part of the country, say where. I've got contact
info for most parts of the country. It's just too darned much to type
all of it.
