Adopting an older (does not mean old) dog, will deny you all these
"rewards" of puppyhood, but many of us have decided to give them
up for Lent.

| Try Angell Memorial in Boston on South Huntington Ave. The MSPCA has a
shelter connected with the veterinary hospital. They have a large
capacity and often are sadly full. Lots of choices there.

It may take some time but you're sure to find the right dog for your
situation. There are other shelters in the Southern NH area to check
too like the ARL in Goffstown and the Manchester shelter (dog pound).
You can try the Lowell Humane Society and if you have a specific breed
in mind try one of their rescue organization (like Cocker Spaniel
Rescue or Poodle Rescue) Sadly, it's usually the larger dogs that
are given up as with the smaller ones, even when untrained, the
behavior just doesn't seem to be so bad. (ie, the messes aren't as big,
they don't take up so much room etc) If you really want to persue
the shelter venue, there is the Associated Humane Societies in New
Jersey. They are a no kill shelter, will no doubt have a dog to fit
the bill and are willing to make arrangements for out of state
adoptions. In the last newsletter I got there was a letter about a dog
that the shelter had delivered to Nashua, NH. And of course there's
always the want advertisers and the newspapers...the Manchester Union
Leader has a column for people giving things away, there are always
dogs and cats for free in there.

| Thanks, everyone! I've been scanning the Nashua and Manchester papers
to no avail. I like the idea of adopting an older dog, which I did
with my greyhound, but we figured we'd start off fresh this time.
Plus, lady seems more patient and gentle with pups in general... and
we'd like to let the dog grow up knowing the cat.
And, don't worry, I won't be heading to the Newark area anytime soon.

How about the Sandown rescue league? There is usually a very
long list of unwanted dogs. In this note do a DIR/TITLE=SANDOWN
and see if that helps. I think its located near Derry NH.

Definately check out the Sterling shelter. We got our dog there in
early Sept. Very nice people, they care for the animals and the prices
are good.

| My cousin (in Peterborough. NH) also had difficulty finding a puppy
last summer. She found a puppy in a shelter in northern Mass.
I believe it was Salem Mass, but I can check if you're interested.
This shelter had the most wonderfully creative system. My details
may be blurred, but the general gist of it was this: They go to rural
areas of the country (where people are apparently less likely to spay
and neuter than in the Northeast). They find litters of puppies,
take the puppies from the owner on the condition that the mom-dog
is spayed, and then the shelter pays for the spaying.
The owners are spared the trouble of disposing of the pups, and the
pups are transported to puppy-poor (so they say) New England.

There were several others listed, but I couldn't get to them because of
server problems. This one looks like a good place to start.
Also, I've heard that the Salem, MA shelter is very good...call before
you go.
