Berners are WONDERFUL dogs! Our Berner, Abby, turns 2 in a couple of
weeks. She has a great disposition, and still has lots of energy. She
absolutely LOVES the cold weather, and is happy to be outside on our
deck with the snow falling on her.

It's really important to give them exposure to other dogs when they are
pups. You might consider going to the "Puppy Playgroup" held at the
All Dogs Gym in Manchester. It's either on Saturday or Sunday mornings
for an hour. It's all puppies, and they can run around the gym and get
some exercise. It's great fun for them and good entertainment for you.

Also, we started Abby in first level obedience training there when she
was about 8 weeks. She loved it. We have since gone on through their
level 3 obedience. I would consider Abby to be pretty well-behaved,
although she does still jump up on people when she greats them, and
still will break an off-leash heel to meet another dog.

I strongly urge you to contact the Bernese Mountain Dog club of Nashoba
Valley. They put on several dog events throughout the year, and
    publish a monthly newsletter.

If this is your first pup, I'd recommend reading the books written by
the Monks of Newskeet "How to be your dogs best friend" and "The art
of raising a puppy". They are excellent books.

Please let us know what questions you have. I'm always thrilled to
    hear about a Berner pup!

2163.7I've met Bernese dogs...BUNKA::LEMENThu Jan 30 1997 09:2111
...and love them! One of our neighbors has three collies, and we have a collie,
and our neighbors ended up pupping sitting for a Bernese named Heidi. What
a gorgeous dog --- she had one of the prettiest faces I've ever seen ---
rust markings around her eyes, a white stripe down her nose, and darker
ears.

She exhausted all four of our dogs when we took them to the local ballfield
to play. (We close the gates and let them run.) It was incredibly fun to
watch.

I've only seen Heidi a few times since them, but she is a great dog.
