253.0. "1997 NBA Playoffs" by PKQRY2::SCOPE_MAN (Vinyl Dinosaur) Mon May 19 1997 13:38

    I didn't see a 1997 playoffs note, so I thought I'd start one.

    Anyone else think the suspension situation in the Knicks-Heat
    series was the deciding factor? Anyone else feel the Knicks
    got shafted?

253.1Rules are part of the Playoffs tooMILKWY::CRUZMon May 19 1997 13:5311
    I don't know if that really was the difference. But, I'm glad the
    league followed the rules. Baseball got themselves in a hot one with
    the Roberto Alomar issue. I believe that the series itself was ugly.
    The refs allowed toooooo much contact. Usually things get out of hand
    when too much contact is allowed. Especially in series when players
    are seeing each other almost every other night. Charlie Ward will be
    accused but Charles Oakley is mean guy. Zo made a fast break basket
    yesterday and then went after the guy. Why??? The ref should have
    give him a "T" right there and stop all the non sense.

    Couldn't have happened to a nicer team. There's no telling it made a
    difference though. Miami wasn't at full strength either. Kathy Petrie
    must be on cloud 9 right now.
253.3NHL Take NoticeDONVAN::SCOPAMon May 19 1997 17:516
    I almost put my foot thru the TV yesterday when Gumbel asked Stern
    those questions.

    Hey Greg....it's over...time to move on...why do we have rules?

    The real questions are:

    1. Is it a good rule to have? (Are you in favor of it?)

    and

    2. If you have rules should they be enforced consistently?
       (at least on a rule by rule basis).

    My opinions are 1) it is a good rule, and 2) it should always
    be enforced irreguardless of the intensity of the altercation.

    Did it have an impact - of course, if nothing else then
    psychologically. But that discussion is not pertainent to the
    issue of whether rules should be enforced.

253.6MLB is looking up to the NBAMILKWY::CRUZFri May 23 1997 12:285
    Yes, the NBA is ahead of MLB. I was very happy when the judge favor
    the NBA in his decision against the players association. I know they
    need to represent the players but that for me was going too far.
