6735.0. "TZ88 -- will a DLTtape III work (read and write)?" by CHOWDA::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Thu May 29 1997 16:22

    Can someone help me out with this?

    	A TZ88 was purchased to be used with an AlphaServer 4100 that's
    running Windows NT 4.0. The system is at a customer site where they have
    been using the DLTtape III cartridges for their OpenVMS VAXcluster.

    	The TZ88 arrived with a CompacTape IV DLT cartridge.

    	Could the customer use their DLTtape III cartridges for the
    backups from the 4100? It was hard to tell from the documentation that
    came with the TZ88. A paragraph made it sound like you could use it
    but a table showed not supported.

    	Appreciating any responses.

6735.1Same capacity but better speed..SUBSYS::TRANStraight <Left> Hitter..Thu May 29 1997 16:436

    Yes, C-III will works in TZ88 with the same format as in TZ87
    (TZ85/86/87 format) with TZ88 speed (1.5MB/s native vs 1.25MB/s native
    on TZ87).

6735.2How about the C-IIIXTsFRAIS::KHANWed Jun 04 1997 05:049
    Does the C-IIIXT also work with a TZ88 ? And if does it, which format
    is used ?

    Reason being, that a customer with lots of DLTs and a mixture of CIII,
    CIIIXT and CIV tapes, was having problems using a TZ88. Bus resets are
    also seen. After lots of SCSI troubleshooting, I installed a TZ87 and
    since then we had no problems. Next step is to reinstall the TZ88 and
    take C-IV tapes only.

6735.3Sure does..SUBSYS::TRANStraight <Left> Hitter..Wed Jun 04 1997 12:035

    Yes. It writes/reads XT format with XT media but you will get TZ88
    performance (1.5-3MB/s) instead of XT's (1.25-2.5MB/s).
