6696.0. "TZ87-va hangs during backup...Help please" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (John Tough) Fri May 16 1997 07:47

Hello all,

I have an intermitant problem on multiple TZ87-va drives during backups.
The drives will work fine fro several weeks, then will "hang" during
a backup. The drive will seem to take a long time to unload after the
batch file kicks the backup. To get the job to restart, the drive
must be reseated into the BA box.

At first it was thought to be a conflict with the RZ29's and the TZ's
in the same BA. The TZ's were moved to their own BA on a seperate
channel on the HSJ42 thereby changeing power supplys and getting
them away from the rz29's. We have also swapped the drives with new
units and it still happens. We have gone thru 5 TZ87-va's. I have also,
at the reccomendation of CSSE, manually disassembled and cleaned the
drive heads. Both drives do have the shields installed.

When this happens, there is one entry into the errorlog. I have
decoded them but most things look ok. Here are what I believe
are the relevent entry information.

The strange things are;

     The "CURRENT LABEL" is now seen as *$ #2 (garbage)

     The error is;
         UNRECOVERABLE ERROR
         DRIVE ERROR
         DEVICE RESPONSE CHECK

     The big discrepancy is in the MSLG$L_GAP_CNT
         FFFFFFFB          GAP COUNT = 4294967291

The device dependent informatin is;

     Instance code 038b450a Device reported SCSI sense data

     Template          61

jumping down the long words.....

   LW 16     00708000

   LW 17     00000002

   LW 18     00000B00

   LW 19     01040000

or they are;

   LW 16     00F18000

   LW 17     FE00000B

   LW 18     01002400

   LW 19     0000A1B8

Decodeing the ASC ASCQ codes show unit either beoming ready or no additional
sense information.

As I said, the strange thing is the gap count and label.

Thanks for any help possible.
