6694.0. "RZ29B-VW will not spin after POST on a 4100 runs" by CSC32::GULDEN () Thu May 15 1997 23:43

I am working with an engineer doing a AlphaServer 4100 install.
He has a PCI Swxcr with 3 BA356 boxes. Each has a 16-bit prosonality.
He is using External busses 0 and 1 , and internal bus 2 is cables
to the rear of the machine. Each BA has RZ29B-VW drives in them. On
power up of the 4100 while it runs POST the drives in channels 1 and 2
are being made inoperable. They will not spin up, no leds. They also
do not show up under RCU. If he moves a working drive from channel 0 to
either channel 1 or 2 and powers up the 4100 it will corrupt that drive
also. He swapped channel 0 and 1 cables at the Swxcr and the problem
    stayed with the channel.

Is there any way in the field to recover these drives. In
troubleshooting he has rendered 6 drives unusable. They do not appear
    to spin.

Corrupt data and not spining are two different problems.

Take the individual drives to a second system and see if you have a drive
problem or if you have a installation problem. If not a drive problem then have
them make sure the SCSI cable is connected to the right port on the personality
card.

Sorry Roger, Corrupt is the wrong word. The drives are being made
inoperable. Will not spin up. The scsi cable was connected to the JA1
(inside) port on the 16 bit personality. Drives worked fine in channel
    0. However if he took a working drive and installed it in channel 1 or
2 the drive would become unusable. IKt would not come ready any more no
matter where placed. If something on the swxcr is causing this is there
any recovery in the field. He has 6 drives that will no longer spin
after installing on either channel 1 or 2.

I got ya wes. Thanx for the clarification...

Only thing I can think of is something in the installation is toasting the
drives. Has anybody taken the drive to a regular 'ol scsi card, cabled up and
applied power to it and listened? If the drive spins, you got'sa
installation/system problem, if it don't then somebody is taking it out.

    Roger,

That is what he had planned. He could not do it at the time I talked
to him. He had a swxcr and cables on order in case that was where the
    problem was.
