6691.0. "Product Identification on new drives" by SEDSWS::SIAREY () Thu May 15 1997 11:18

    Hi,

Could someone confirm for me how the NEW RZ2x drives, as per the recent
BLITZ, are seen under SCU in the 'Product Identification' field.

I ask because the Blitz talks about the drives having incompatable
firmware, so I need to know if the only way of telling which type of
drive it is, is from the version of the firmware.

    Many thanks,
    Colin S.

The product name in the inquiry string for both devices IS RZ28M and/or RZ26N

The only indicator is the FIRMWARE. New drives run 1xxx and up, Original drives
use 466/568/616 or 744.

6691.3What is a RZ28WSEDSWS::SIAREYThu May 22 1997 06:1012
    Roger,

I have another quick question. In the RZ2x firmware directory there is
a firmware file for RZ28W, is this a different device to the RZ28 and
if so does the 'Product Identification:' say RZ28 or RZ28W?

If it says RZ28, can we tell the difference by using the 'Support for
    16 Bit Transfers:' information?

    Many thanks,
    Colin S.

re-1

The file you are refering to should actually read rz28-w and yes it is a wide
version of the original rz28 (i'll change it). And yes, if the drive reports
back that is supports 16 bit transfers, then that drive is considered wide.
However, in this particular drive family the firmware file is NOT the same
between narrow and wide drives so refer to the matrix.

    Roger,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Just to clarify, if under 'scu show device' the drive reports itself as
a RZ28 AND it has support for 16 bit transfers (set to 1), then we
should be loading the 442E code. Does this version of the RZ28 have the
same issues with electronic modules ie. P4/P5 etc.

I am writing a ultrix script to automatically interigate the attached
drives, assess if a code update is required and then offer the RIGHT
code to be downloaded, hence I need to understand how each device
reports itself and how to distinquish between the various flavours.

    Many thanks for your help,

    Best regards,
    Colin S.

Correct!

Mostly ;^) 442E was and is the only code ever released to the wide RZ28 so there
no need to reload it over itself.

Nope. Only 1 version exists...
