6688.0. "Poor Performance switch from HSJ40 to HSJ50" by CHTRBX::HESHELMAN () Wed May 14 1997 13:19

A customer has a VAX7610 and VAX7620. They recently switched from HSJ40s to
HSJ50s and their performance decreased dramatically. They insist that there were
no other changes in their environment. Just so nothing obvious is being
overlooked, does anyone have any suggestions as what to be looking at? Is 4K
packet size an issue? Drive firmware?

6688.1Look at these things...SSDEVO::RMCLEANWed May 14 1997 14:023
4k packet size might improve things. Is caching turned on? This is usally
the biggest culpret to a LARGE change. Did you change something else in the
configuration???
6688.2Does the CIXCD support 4k packets?CHTRBX::HESHELMANThu May 15 1997 09:5617
>>> 4k packet size might improve things.

Please educate me on this.
I thought the CIXCD did not support 4k packets but that the HSJ50 does. If this
is the case, I was wondering if some parameters must be set for correct
operation. I assumed the HSJ50 automatically adjusted itself to talk "down" to
the CIXCD.

>>> Is caching turned on?
Yes, as a matter of fact the customer reports using 64MB of cache and that the
larger cache (they were using 32MB in the HSJ40) has helped "a little"

>>> Did you change something else in the configuration???
Customer swears they didn't.

Can you post the output of the following CLI commands:
SHOW THIS FULL
SHOW UNIT FULL
SHOW STORAGE FULL
SHOW DEVICES FULL

An HSJ50 should perform almost the same as an HSJ40, certainly with
CIXCD's as host adapters.
