6637.0. "Archieve data on NT File Share Service or CD Jukebox????" by BUMP::COCONNELL () Tue Apr 29 1997 14:55

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help me make the correct choice
for storing archive data. This data is historical and even
though it won't be needed on a daily basis, it should be accessible
on demand, unless someone can advise me of a different alternative.

I have approximately 37.5 gig currently with a growth rate of about
	20 million blocks per year.

I am interested in comparing the pros and cons of a NT File Share
Service versus a CD jukebox. I have estimated cost for the NT file
share but am overwhelmed with the various disks/jukeboxes...

Can anyone shed any light on this matter? Also any pointers to
overall detailed information on what they are, how they work etc.
for the jukebox novice would be great.
I have scanned the web and have found a lot of product material,
almost too much, and am not sure if there is a digital direction.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated,
Cyndi

Can I assume a Raid 5 set with 9GB drives is too pricey?

I believe so, although I am only guessing at the cost. What would be
the pros of this appproach over nt file service or cd jukebox?

Get into AQS and check the pricing of 4 9GB drives a BA356 with PS and
8 or 16 bit personality module and a 1 channell PCI or Eisa Raid
controller. Should be under 16K. Benefits are that it is direct
attached Disks and not a single CD jukebox. More users will be able to
get at it with faster transfer rates.

Due to FCC issues the standalone BA356 is not yet supported with RZ40's in it.
Supported cabinets are SW300, SW500, SW800.

A change is in the works.
