I have a customer that recently went from a 3 node DSSI VAX 4105A cluster. The disks were located in several pedestal units. To a 3 node (2-VAX 4105A) and 1 AS1000A. From what the customer says they couldnt see the new HSD30s from the VAX console and they couldnt boot. FIRST QUESTION Any one know what version console is the latest for VAX 4105As? They are running version 2.6. They got it working but they reconfigured it this way. Instead of each pair of dual redundant HSD30s connected via the short cable between the TRI link connectors they removed it and plugged a bus from each system into it. I know they are connected at the Backplane but just wanted to figure out if this is truly a dual redundant configuration! They still cant see the HSD30s from the VAX but it boots HMMMM! I didnt install this so Im in the dark somewhat! SECOND QUESTION Some have both lights lit on the 8 bit personality of the BA35X shelves. Several have only 1 light lit.The shelves are installed in a SW500 Storageworks Cabinet. And boy is it hot inside 3 shelves in front 3 in back plus each HSD30 BA350-MBs. They also have RZ29b-VAs installed in some of the shelves! What do the light mean other than fan problems 2 on 1 on so on... Mike Turro offline converstions at [email protected]

Mike, I'll try to answer your second question.... On the 8-bit the 2 LED's are always related to the blower status. One LED lit - one blower has failed, the other will be at high speed. The LED reflects which is failed. Two LED's lit - can mean two things: 1) both blowers have failed or 2) more likely - the ambient temperature is high, so both blowers will run at high speed. If the front of the cabinet is not full, you will be getting re-circulated (exhaust) air at the front of the BA356. This can have a long term negative impact on the drives. Since you have RZ29B's in the cabinet, you should have installed a fan tray in the top back of the cabinet. If you don't have the fan tray, your drives will die sooner than they should! (Whenever there are 7200 RPM drives in a cabinet - SW500 or SW800, you need the fan tray to help cool the drives.) Hope that helped.... Bill |
