6497.0. "HSZ50 + 16-bit I/O module shelf" by GOYA::GALAN () Wed Mar 19 1997 13:58

    Hi everybody.

I know we are configuring BA3** shelves attached to HSZ50 with the
8-bit personality module, because the controller is 8-bit at this
moment. In this way the shelf can connect VA and VW disks.

Apart of this, and looking at the AS4100 systems we are delivering
    (there is a KZPAA connect by a BN21N to a 16-bit shelf), I'd
like to know if we can configure the HSZ50 using the
16-bit I/O module and the special cable, like:

    HSZ50 ------------------- BA3**shelf + BA35X-MH (16-bit I/O module)
          BN21N-xx cable

I want to prepare the shelf for 16-bit controllers, and I think the
BN21N cable can do the transition between the 8-bit and the 16-bit.

What do you think of this? Is this supported at this moment? Why not?

    Thanks,
    Ana Galan

I don't think it is supported nor do i think it would work. The HSZ50
is narrow to the drives and that is why it needs an 8 bit I/O module

    1. The 'trick' with KZPAA, BA356, 16-bit pers. Mod and BN21N has shown
to work, BUT this does NOT imply it's supported.
The issue here: The unused UPPER Byte of the Wide shelf is ONLY
terminated on ONE end. According to the SCSI-specs this MIGHT BE
ALLOWED, IF this length is less than 1 meter (which it is).
Leaves you with the issue: Suppose you run into some nasty
problems, where Storage Engineering has to be involved, WHAT WILL
THEY SAY? My guess: They say: not supported, becuase we have the
8-bit Pers. Modules specially for these configurations.

    2. BA356, 16-bit Pers. Mod., BN21N and HSZ40.
Same applies as at 1., BUT the HSZ release notes CLEARLY say
8-bit personality Module. Will a 16-bit Pers. Module work?
It MAY work. And if you found it does NOT work (properly), WHO are
    	you going to call?
