6471.0. "RZ28C version 8108 or 8104" by KAOFS::HXMP01::p_savoie (mcs network support) Wed Mar 12 1997 12:16

Hi,
One of the Prioris server techtip 2312.htm warns about using the SEAUP100
utility when RZ28C drives running with 8108 firmware are left in the
storage box.
Since the current shipping rev is 8108, will there be an updated SEAUP
utility ? When will this version be available on SUBSYS ?

The concern here is maybe the field should go directly to 8108 to save
time, since this is the shipping version.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, what does that mean?

The difference between 8104 and 8108 is ONE change. This one change is that
while the drive is sitting there waiting to spin up during a staggered spin up
it returns in response to a test unit ready an 02/04/02 (8108) instead of an
02/04/01 (8104 and below).

02/04/01 = In process of becoming ready.
02/04/02 = Send me a start command.

6471.2Refer to Prioris tech tip 2312.htmKAOFS::HXMP01::p_savoiemcs network supportWed Mar 12 1997 14:2918
Hi,
One of the Prioris tech-tips(2312.htm) on web server akin40.ako.dec.com
warns(my understanding) that the utility will blast 8104 code in any drive
that matches the ST32550 signature, even the ones running 8108, i.e
downgrading them. It states"The problem with this approach is that disks that
have 8108 firmware(the currently shipping revision) get written over, and
most of the time, the program halts leaving the raidset in an unknown state.
The most common result is on the subsequent re-boot, the systems states NO OS
FOUND". There is a suggested procedure to recover.

I know the tech tip is public access, but service engineers in the field
don't seem to be aware of this problem.

It's not clear if the problem is related to the fact that the program bombs
out prematurely(my guest) or is due to the firmware difference.

Thanks,
Paul
6471.3Ahh I see,,SUBSYS::VIDIOT::PATENAUDEAsk your boss for ARRAY's...Wed Mar 12 1997 14:577
Arbitrarily loading code into a drive without checking NAME AND VERSION already
on the drive is VERY dangerous. 8104 into a 8108 is safe but 8101 into a 8104 or
8101 into a 8108 can kill drives because old firmware is NOT always foward
(hardware changes) compatible. New code is almost always backware compatible.

    I'm the one that own's this Roger!!!!!! ;^)

    We removed the file from the external web as there was a problem with
    a customer running this and blowing away his raidset. We released this
    program when 8101 was prevelent and there was no such thing as 8108.
    In
    the interium, 8108 came out, and before we realized the shortcomings
    of the firmware load utility, we had this customer issue. Rather than
    risk another customer blowing away thier raidset, we felt compelled
    to remove the file from the 'external' website. IT IS STILL available
    from the internal site with the limitations and risks outlined.
    If you go to file download, utilities, FW utilities, RZ28/29, you
    will find the SEAUP100 program. The techtip states to remove drives
    with 8108 loaded prior to booting this floppy. All should be well.
