6467.0. "OEM vs SWX/DS- ??" by CHEFS::ZELEZINSKIJ () Tue Mar 11 1997 08:57

An end user in Reuters UK are asking what the differences are between
our OEM and DS-RZxx-xx disk drives. I have told him about the "value
add" that SEP provide but he wants to know more !!!

Is there a way of getting and overview on what the SEP guys provide in
terms of microcode changes etc to make bought in disks supportable
across multi platforms. Specific info on the DS-RZ40-VA whould be realy
    useful.

Do these micro code changes get implemented by Digital or are they fed
back to the OEM ie Seagate or Quantum ??

    Regards

As stated a couple times before, it is REAL hard for us to blow our own horn on
what we do to make the Vendor's OEM drive better, without biting the same hand
that feeds us.

The Disk Business Manager is Rich Avis in SHR. He has a presentation about what
SEP does to add value that is available to present. I do "believe" only under
NDA though. Contact him.

Just a few tidbits without naming vendors, we find and request changes to things
ranging from improper scsi bus protocol to data corruption to head crashing.
These fixes may or may not be in their oem drive depending on when we found
them, verses when the drive shipped out of the vendor. Normally we lag behid
them for a reason ;^)

When we release a drive, it has been certified, qualified, baked, code rolled,
bounced, polished and adjusted to fit our needs. Usually, this all happens AFTER
the OEM has already started to ship to the streets.

So if the Customer wants to buy off the street, he is more than welcome to do
so. But, he is also assuming responsibility to do the qual and integration and
support work we do, himself.
