For a new VMScluster, I'd take a serious look at memory channel (MC),
I'd definitely configure Ethernet or (better) FDDI, and I'd definitely
look to configure a dual-host SCSI (possibly with the HSZ40/RZ29 or
HSZ40/RZ40 storage) in preference to a CI/HSJ solution.
But to answer your question, yes, the minimum number of CI controllers
required for a two-node VMScluster is two.

Interesting you recommend going SCSI over CI .... yes the technology is
over 10 years old, but when I asked some of the Storage Engineers which
technology they would recommend for bet your business solutions (which
clusters usually are), they recommended CI over SCSI. The HSJ50
performance is much improved and basically on par with the HSZ50. Then
you get all the distance advantages of CI over SCSI, plus redundant
paths in the cable.
Yes it costs way more than a SCSI solution, but proven reliability is
worth something.
Of course once Fiberchannel/UltraSCSI stuff arrives then we really will
see a significant performance difference over CI.
