6455.0. "Tape drive that is compatible with TF85,TK70" by HGOVC::CHRISTSANG () Fri Mar 07 1997 03:12

    Hello,

We have a customer who is migrating from VAX/VMS to Alpha/OpenVMS
system. From the VAX/VMS, they have 2 types of tape system :

    1. TF85
    2. TK70

I am looking for a suitable tape drive for the Alpha/OpenVMS environment
(Alphaserver 8200, PCI, SCSI) that can read the above 2 types of tape.

From the SOC (Nov 96) page 6.82, I noticed that TZ87 is read-compatible
with TK70. However, apparently, TZ87 is end-of-line. Anyway, we still
need a tape drive that is TF85 compatible.

Please advise on the appropriate tape drive(s).

    Thanks and best regards
    Chris

Other than the TZ87, there is none.

Time to migrate the customer to newer tape drives - the TK70 is EOL,
and there are no drives currently shipping that can read their tapes.

I think there is a PCI/DSSI adapter. You could use that to
keep the TF85, at least long enough to migrate the data up
to the current or next generation of DLT. The TZ88 will
read the CompacTape III tapes of the TF85 as well. But
the CompacTape II of the TK70 will need migration.
