6417.0. "drives in sw310 ..." by XFMV01::AJITK () Mon Feb 24 1997 01:25

Hi

The SW310 sales update mentions SWXD3-WE as the part no
for a 4GB wide drive (7200 rpm).

Is this same as RZ29B-VW ? (price list has different prices
for these 2 part nos).

Also in general, can the corresponding RZ.. part nos be used
instead of the SW.. part nos mentioned in the sales update ?

Please treat this in the context of a new requirement
for SW310 with a certain no of drives.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

one more query :

Can Storageworks Command Console software be used for
configuration and monitoring of SW310 (HSZ20) connected
to a Digital Unix system ?

Yup...provided the Controller is running HSOF V3.0 as a minimum.
The demo I've seen even has a RA310 included (albeit represented
    graphically as an SW300-based cabinet).

AS the RA310 currently is shipped with HSOF 2.7 swcc in not supported yet.

yes. exact same drive with same code and jumpers. price list was supposed to be
modified so they were same.

yes, in genral. Any RZ in a SBB manufactured since early '96 are now jumpered
the same as their SXW counterpart. Attached is a BLITZ that went out explaining
the details.

       ANNOUNCEMENT SENT TO PARTNERS:

May 31, 1996

DIGITAL EXTENDS "UNIVERSAL PRODUCT" STRATEGY FOR STORAGEWORKS

FROM: Ron Gervenack, StorageWorks World Wide Channels Sales & Marketing Vice
Presdient

I am pleased to announce the next steps in the "Universal Product" strategy
for Digital Equipment Corporation's StorageWorks product line that will
simplify how you work with Digital, increase your profits, and increase your
customers' satisfaction with StorageWorks solutions.

Effective immediately, Digital will significantly extend our "Universal
Product" strategy, which offers a single part number and single price for each
StorageWorks product supported by multiple platforms. This will not only
simplify your configuration and ordering of StorageWorks solutions, but will
also reduce your costs by reducing the number of Stock Keeping Units (SKUs)
and overall inventory expenses. Additionally, it will help you sell
StorageWorks more effectively and efficiently with a clearer, stronger sales
message.

In additional to those products already having common part numbers, we now
announce the next phase with two important changes:

First, new StorageWorks products with the same form, fit, function and
applicability will have one part number and price, regardless of which vendor
platform is utilized -- Digital, HP, IBM, Sun or Windows NT. Thus you will
begin to immediately realize the benefits of reduced inventory costs and
simplified purchasing procedures. StorageWorks' new generation of FDDI servers
are representative of our single part number strategy.

Second, the following disk drives are now formally qualified as interchangeable
at the indicated minimum revision level:

Digital Minimum Multivendor Minimum Product
Part No.	Revision Part No. Revision Description

RZ26N-VA	B03 SWXD3-SF A01	1.05 GB, N-SE, 5400 rpm
RZ26N-VW	C03 SWXD3-WF A01	1.05 GB, W-SE, 5400 rpm

RZ28M-VA	B03 SWXD3-SH A01	2.10 GB, N-SE, 5400 rpm
RZ28M-VW	C03 SWXD3-WH A01	2.10 GB, W-SE, 5400 rpm

RZ28D-VA	A02 SWXD3-SG A01	2.10 GB, N-SE, 7200 rpm
RZ28D-VW	B02 SWXD3-WG A01	2.10 GB, W-SE, 7200 rpm

RZ29B-VA	C02 SWXD3-SE C02	4.29 GB, N-SE, 7200 rpm
RZ29B-VW	C02 SWXD3-WE A01	4.29 GB, W-SE, 7200 rpm

All existing Multivendor and Digital part numbers will continue to be
recognized until normal product phase out.

Another very important aspect of this announcement is that Digital's
Multivendor Customer Services (MCS) world-wide organization will now fully
service interchangeable StorageWorks products across all supported platforms.
Staffs of both the StorageWorks Resource Center (for pre-sales support) and MCS
(for post-sales support) have been trained on the "Universal Product" strategy,
and are prepared to support you in recognizing changes and sales benefits
today.

Following is a brief Q&A which should answer any questions you may have about
our new direction. If you have any other questions regarding StorageWorks'
"Universal" Product strategy and implementation, contact your Distribution
Account Manager, Storage Sales Specialist,or the StorageWorks Resource Center.

Sincerely,

Ron Gervenack

"UNIVERSAL PRODUCT" Q&A

Q: Are warranties for add-on RZ*** and SW*** drives different?
A: The warranty for add-on RZ*** and SW*** disk drives are identical:
    1 year on-site, 4 additional years Return-To-Digital. Additional on-site
warranty is provided on selected Digital platform servers when the RZ***
drives are sold as an integrated part of those servers.

Q: In the past, MCS has not serviced SW*** drives when they have been
connected to Digital platforms. Will this change?
A: Yes, MCS is implementing the administrative changes and training not only
to support SW*** disks on Digital platforms but also to provide service
for RZ*** disks used on Sun, IBM or HP platforms. Digital's goal is total
    single-source support.

Q: Why is there a selected list of disk drives that is defined as compatible?
A: We have fully tested these drives and are confident of their
    interchangeability.

Q: Is my existing inventory of storage products functionally equivalent?
A: Yes, if the products are identified in this communication.

Q: Will there be additional devices added to this list?
A: Yes, as we continue to qualify existing storage devices as interchangeable,
they will be added to the list.

Q: Does this mean either RZ*** or SW*** is going to disappear?
A: No. This is a three-part answer. One, current plans are for all products
to be introduced with SW*** part numbers. Two, all SW*** storage subsystems
will continue to be sold as SW*** parts (including the StorageWorks RAID
Array 410 on Digital UNIX and Windows NT). Three, all RZ*** parts that
exist today will continue to exist until product phase out.
