I have a DEC 2000 Model 300 Alpha (Jensen) system with a single RZ25L disk installed! I'm trying to upgrade to OpenVMS 7.1 and am failing because I'm out of disk space! I have available to me an RZ29 in nice StorageWorks plug-in modules. My questions are: 1. Can I dismantle the RZ29 module and use it to replace the internal RZ25L? 2. Is there room in a Jensen box to install the "dismantled" RZ29 as a 2nd internal drive? If so, what will I need any extra mounting brackets or othere hardware? Thanks, Denny

The real question is whether a Jensen can cool an RZ29B. They run quite hot.

I suggest you remove the RZ25 and go with just the RZ29. With empty drive bays above and below it you should be able to run without burning-up the disk. Steve P.

First, it is an RZ29B not RZ29, as we have never shipped any RZ29's (yet). Second, you need airflow over the device, not just room for the air. The Jensen may have enough cooling through the drive bay, it may not. I was holding back comment for a platform person, I'm only a disk guy ;^) If it is your own home system that is powered off 90% of the time go for it. If it is under your desk and running all day and night, keep current backups. Roger.

It is a home system, and is powered off for extended periods of time, and is extremely rare to be powered on for more than 12 consecutive hours. The heat dissipation problem hadn't occurred to me! Thanks for the warning! Denny |
