6354.0. "Does Quantum Fireball Disk Work?" by VAXRIO::MARCELO () Tue Jan 28 1997 10:08

    Can anyone inform me whether the following SCSI disk drive made by Quantum
    is compatible with an ALPHA AXP 150 system?

    Do I need any special firmware for it to work? Adaptec firmware is
    V G2.

    DISK: Quantum Fireball TM 3.2 GBytes

    Adaptec SCSI adapter 30-40383-01 in a DECPC AXP 150. Running
    WINDOWS NT or Digital Unix. Both systems hang with the RED LED on the
    SCSI interface staying lit.

    A similar SEAGATE drive works fine.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Obligitory disclaimer;

    "If it soes not say RZ in the part number or SWXD3, it is NOT
    supported on Alpha or VAX"

    Now to the problem.

    The LED staying on the controller means the bus is STUCK in phase and
    not completing an I/O. Most likley cause of theis is bad termination,
    excessive bus length (3 meter max including BA shelfs @ .9mtr per).
    Not usually a drive issue. Also on the AXP150, using drives on both
    internal and external bus off the same 1740 is not recommended.

6354.2LEFTY::CWILLIAMSCD or not CD, that's the questionTue Jan 28 1997 15:5511
    I'll be a little stronger on the 1740 internal/external:

    Don't do both. Internal -OR- external, not both. THe 1740 has poor bus
    timing and drivers, and can cause data corruption if both connectors
    are used. I would also keep whatever cable you are using as short as
    possible (~ 2 M max for Fast10 SCSI).

    It works fine if configured using the above rules, though.

    I have inherited an empty Jensen on which I want to install both
    OpenVMS and Windows-NT.
    I have installed 128 Mb of memory and two Quantum Fireball 3.2 Gb
    SCSI drives (you don't want to know why I don't use RZ's, it's our
    wonderful internal ordering process...)
    The Jensen ROM version is 2.2. VMS PAL X5.48 / OSF PAL X1.35.
    SRM 370. AHA1742A rev. G.2, internal cable only, terminated at the
    end of the internal cable, no termination packs on the controller,
    external terminator on the board.
    When I try to install VMS I boot from CDrom, answer a couple of
    questions, until it gets to the point where it tries to initialize
    and mount the target disk. There it hangs. After a while the CD
    is ejected. It does not make any difference whether I use VMS
    version 7.1 or 6.2.
    When I go into DCL from the menu, I can see the disks allright, I
    can even INIT them and mount them foreign. When try to mount them
    normally, the same hang happens, the CD goes into and comes out of
    mount verification. When I do a mount/noassist, the system
    comes back with the message:
    	%MOUNT-F-MAPHDRBAD, storage map header is bad; volume locked

    When I try to load the Windows-NT 4.0 system, I boot from the CD,
    the Windows NT Setup screen appears, it says:
    	Setup is loading files (Windows NT Executive)
    but after a short while get the message:
    	File \alpha\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
    	The error code is 4

    I have hooked up one of the Fireballs to a Flamingo, works fine.
    Installed VMS on the disk, moved it back to the Jensen, no joy.
    Trying to boot gives a fatal controller error (00000054).
    Replaced the Fireball with a loaned RZ29B, works fine...

    Any ideas? I'll probably move the Fireballs to the Flamingo and
    take two RZ28s from there to the Jensen.

    Rien.
