6349.0. "Optical library RW546, RW551" by HGOVC::CHRISTSANG () Mon Jan 27 1997 21:47

    Hello,

    I would like to inquire about the new optical library product :

    a.  RW546-ZA

    b.  RW551-ZC

    1. Are these two products supported on Digital Unix ?

    2. If so, what version of Digital Unix should be used ?

    3. We have a propsect using an Alphaserver 4100 on Digital Unix. What
    peripheral controller, apart from KZPAA because two have already been
    used on the AS4100, should be used on the AS4100 to connect to either
    RW546-ZA or RW551-ZC ?

    Please advise.

    Best regards
    Chris

6349.1Assuming this is related to your other question?SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smithApps EngineerTue Jan 28 1997 07:2718
	Again, Optical questions are best addressed in the OPTICAL
conference, but Yes, like your last question these new jukeboxes are
supported on Unix (when V1.5 OSMS ships in a few weeks [hopefully]).
	Due to a problem with the KZPAA adapter, V1.5 os OSMS will
NOT, I repeat NOT support the KZPAA at FRS of OSMS... Once the Unix
folks have made the official patches they're working on available,
KZPAA support can be re-added, but until then, the KZPSA is the
recommended adapter. This is also different since the RW546 is a
DIFFERENTIAL SCSI ONLY. The other 4x MO devices (RW551,552,555,557)
are all 50-pin HD SE, AND/OR 68-pin DIFF. (there are connectors for
both, and the user selects which port is active via a small switch).

	The other controller that is qualified by Optical engineering
is the KZPDA, but it is a FWSE controller, so if you chose an RW546
you would need a DWZZA to convert the DIFF SCSI to SE SCSI...

6349.2DWZZA and HSJ in RW546 ?HGOVC::CHRISTSANGFri Jan 31 1997 02:1721
    Joe,

    May I confirm with you that the followings configuration is valid :

    Alphaserver 4100

        KZPSA-BB FWD SCSI ------------------------------RW546
                              cable BN21K-02

    In particular, I would like to know that there are no DWZZA signal
    converter nor HSJ controller needed on the RW546 box; and that the
    BN21K is the appropriate cable for this connection.

    Please advise.

    Best regards
    Chris
6349.3Correct configuration...SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smithApps EngineerFri Jan 31 1997 10:4814
Hi Chris,

	No, that is not the correct cable... The RW546 is a
differential device, but it has a 50-pin LOW DENSITY connector...
Therefore the correct cable is the BN21M-xx where xx is the cable
length is in meters...
	Remember, the RW546 is a new 4X MO jukebox that requires OSMS
V3.4 for OpenVMS, and the NOT YET RELEASED V1.5 of OSMS for Digital
Unix... HSJ's will not work with Digital UNIX in this case...
	You should check with George Pappas for formal
dates/committments...

6349.4KZPSA fails with terminator on RW546 STP01::STPVNV::stp01::voinovVladimir Voinov, MCS RussiaThu Mar 13 1997 06:1016
Hi,

I have a problem, concerning the configuration discussed in this topic.
AlphaServer 4100 is connected using KZPSA-PS (I hope, this means -BB?) to
RW546-ZA. If we don't use the terminator (differential, of course) on RW
side, controller and both optical drives should be detected with
no problems. But, the installation of terminator causes KZPSA initialization
to fail with message sounds like:
"KZPSA: interrupt due to internal error".
KZPSA Termpwr is set to 1, but setting it to 0 produces multiple SCSI bus
errors upon init.
The customer is using third-party cable, not BN21M.

Thanks in advance,
Vladimir.
