5287.0. "Tapes become unaccessable/dual site cluster" by COMICS::SHELLEY (Lead, follow, or get out the way) Thu Apr 17 1997 13:10

    Hi,

A customer has a dual site FDDI (100mb dual link loop FDDI ring)
with 7 VAX nodes running OpenVMS 6.1

He has a problem with TA90's on HSC70's on one site where they
cannot be seen on the other site.

These nodes get the message -

    %MOUNT-F-NOTLABELMT, tape is not labeled

This is similar to known problem with Alpha where the
workaround to access tapes from vax !

(see [OpenVMS]MOUNT-F-NOTLABELMT After MOUNT/FOR TMSCP Served Tape on Alpha)

The workaround is to reboot the node that exhibits the problem but the
problem seems to spread to other nodes in the cluster until ultimately
all nodes on the other site can no longer access any tape drives.

The customer has applied VAXSHAD09_061 which contains the latest TMSCP
    image for 6.1

Have you any suggestions as to how this matter can be resolved.

    Thanks for your comments

    Hi,
Have you checked the errorlogs on both the server
and the clients after a failed operation. On the server
be looking for "CACHE DATA LOST" errors. On the client
side check for "UNEXPECTED END MESSAGES".

Please post an image ident/link date-time for the TMSCP image
    from your VAX servers.

The symptoms you describe fit a few different
    problem scenarios.
