5262.0. "same unit number on disk" by HGOSPS::MASCOTTANG () Fri Mar 21 1997 02:30

My customer buys two ALPHA 4100 systems and runs ALPHA VMS V6.2. His
configuration is listed as follows:

        ---------+--------------------------+----------------
                 | |
                 | |
 +-------+ +-----+-----+ +-------+-----+ +-------+
 | disk2 +--+ NODE A | | NODE B +----| disk1 |
 +-------+ +----+------+ +------+------+ +-------+
                | |
                | +---------+ |
                +-------| HSZ40 |--------+
                        +---------+

My question is :

1) Can I have the same unit number on disk1 and disk2 ?
2) If yes, how can I do that ?

Would anyone have this experience ? Any advcie should be appreciated.

What is the allocation class of the HSZ?
Will both nodes be MSCP disk servers?

Assume the HSZ has an allocation class of 1 (any nonzero value will
do). Assume further that both nodes will be MSCP disk servers.
Then both nodes must have their allocation class set to the same value
    as the HSZ, hence 1.
The name for disks disk1 and disk2 will therefore be of the form
$1$dkcu, where c is the controller letter (A, B etc.) and u is the unit
    number.
In order to uniquely identify (served) disks throughout the cluster,
their name must be unique. Therefore, if you want to have identical
unit numbers you must have different controller letters.

Also you may find useful information in the OpenVMS V6.2 New Features
Manual, Chapter 7 "SCSI as a VMScluster Storage Interconnect". (The
manual is available in TIMA [among others]).

    Raymond.
