:Within my knowledge hot sparing is not supported under OpenVMS volume
:shadowing software.
This should work fine, and is fully supported assuming geometries match.
Performing a BACKUP/PHYSICAL from a good member to the new member can
speed the necessary merge operation, but this requires dismounting a
"good" member to act as the source, and this involves performing two
merges (the "good" volume will get stale, and the physical copy of the
"good" volume will be stale). (Dismounting the volume and performing
the merges may not be entirely desirable in a two volume shadowset.)

I thought the word "hot sparing" describes the automatic replacement of
the failed shadow, mirror, or raid set members with spare set members.
And I beleive it's not supported unser OpenVMS volume shadowing software.
Right?

| VMS Host Based Shadowing does not support automatic replacement of member
devices. (don't know anout controller based shadowing). HBS will detect the
removed member as failed and will remove it in SHADOW_MBR_TIMEOUT seconds,
if the removed member wasn't the only source.

:Right?
Transparent and automatic? No. Though this implementation looks like
maybe an hour's worth of DCL coding...

| POLYcenter Watchdog and POLYcenter Console Manager ought to be able to help.
