280.0. "V3.2 Run on Cortex?" by GRANPA::KILGORE (Dan @ Washington) Tue May 13 1997 11:54

I have a customer that wants to deploy 8 CORTEX VxWorks target systems.
He has implemented his solution on VxWorks for Alpha V 3.2

Will these codes run on a AlphaVME288 with 128MB memory? The SPD doesn't
say.

Having to upgrade to 5.2 may squelch the deal. Any help??

Dan,

No chance. Cortex is new in V5.2B. It would be very difficult (probably
impossible) to hook it up to V3.x. Digital would have to re-release
V3.2 to support Cortex. It's not going to happen.

At this point, we're ready to deny that V3.x ever existed. Existing
customers should upgrade for their own good. There's still a chance
they'll be able to get the price incentives for upgrading that were
supposed to expire on February 1. Also, when V5.3/Tornado for Alpha
swings by, V5.2 customers will be in a much better position to upgrade
    than V3.2 customers.

If it means anything to them, no one has had a problem updating from
V3.x to V5.x. It sounds like a big jump because of all the skipped
numbers between 3.2 and 5.2 but it's really not. It's really like how a
V5.1 to V5.2 upgrade would be for a Wind River customer. The biggest
issues are non-technical ones. The way the product is licensed has
changed. Once the pencil-pushers get that straight, the technical part
of the upgrade will be a snap.
