| When Wind River came to town last month for the Embedded Systems
Conference, the operatives from Digital and Wind River were able to get
together and make some progress on the issues which have been standing
in the way of a Tornado product for Alpha.
Unofficially, we've been led to believe that the two companies have
reached an understanding to provide Tornado support for Alpha much in
the same manner as the StrongARM support is being provided by Digital
Semiconductor. That is, the Alpha support will be integrated into Wind
River's standard product line and sold as a Wind River product. An
official announment will surely be forthcoming when a contract is
signed, sealed and delivered.
It will take several months before there's a V5.3/Tornado for Alpha.
The 64 bit support is a big problem that other architecture ports (like
StrongARM) don't have. There will be at least one more release of
VxWorks for Alpha V5.2x from Digital (and maybe even one after that)
before there's a V5.3/Tornado release. We have to stay current with
new hardware.
Customers should take advantage of the V3.2->V5.2 upgrade program while
it's still available. The day is coming very soon where V3.2 will be an
unsupported product and will not be easily upgradable. The V5.2 update
should be positioned as a stepping stone to V5.3. They'll get there a
lot easier if they're starting at the latest V5.2x. I think it's
reasonable to assume that existing V5.2 customers (with support
contracts) will be taken care of when V5.3 comes around.
As this is an unannounced agreement, I will not allow any more
discussion of it in this notesfile. I've already said too much but I
think it's important for everyone to know what's going on. If you have
any questions, send mail to HELIX::REALTIME (or to
[email protected]) and we'll put you in contact with someone
who can help you.
