273.0. "Ada9x + VxWorks ? GNAT + port ?" by BBPBV1::WALLACE (john wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093) Tue Mar 11 1997 15:04

Anybody got customers interested in Ada9x on VxWorks i.e. real embedded
    +realtime systems ?

Rational, "Digital's strategic partners for Ada", have said that they
have no committed schedule for Ada 9x for VxWorks/Alpha. APECSworks
will replace VADSworks and provide Ada 9x capability, but Alpha is a
low priority for host+target. (For a reminder of what was promised by
the Rational alliance, see IR Customer Update CU007F (1994)).

Rational's lack of interest in Alpha has encouraged a serious UK
VxWorks/Alpha/Ada prospect to go out and look at GNAT, the GNU Ada
Toolkit, which is now available with commercial support. This prospect
also looked at Greenhills Ada before GNAT but decided against it.

GNAT uses many components which already exist on Alpha (both on UNIX
and even on VMS). This prospect reckons the only major missing piece is
the run-time support, and because GNAT RTL uses POSIX threads for Ada
tasking, they don't believe there will be a big problem in making it
work on top of VxWorks' POSIX threads. Hopefully they are correct.

Info on gnat is available at

So: who else might be interested in something like this ?

I guess I'm interested. I'm not sure what can I do to help, though.

I'm interested, although I have no current prospects I'm hoping to
generate lots of VxWorks requirements when we launch our DSP product at
the end of the year. The Defence community still has a mandate to use
    Ada.
