    They were also made of a high impact plastic. Same stuff now seen in or
    on most bumpers and lower molded parts of the car. Gardianian Rubber
    Company had the plastic stuff for this unique car. Yes! Its a
    colectable machine. Not many really made. Terrible colors. But, unique!

    The science museum in Toronto used to have a Bricklin that was sliced
    in half to reveal the internal construction. It was supposed to be the
    safest vehicle of its day, with all sortsa crash resistance and
    protection.
206.4some weird ideas too...TARKIN::POLLOCKThu Apr 24 1997 17:076

    Ya and stupid stuff too, like no ashtrays cause your hands should
    always be on the wheel, and the seats were an almost velcro like
    material to prevent you from sliding on the seats while cornering...

    It was the thoughts of the time. Velcro like seats, and no ashtrays.
    There is a design issue reguarding ashtrays in cars today. Me? I don't
    smoke and rather see it used for other things than a place to put my
    highway tokens.:)

    There are other things that can be seen rather stupid, but ahead of the
    times in lots of cars. How about the cadi with the 8-6-4 engine
    program. Where when you need all 8 you get it. When you need 6 out of 8
    there it is. Saving the owner gas etc. The plan on paper at the time
    was rather futuristic. But low and behold! It was a night-mare to fix
    and to impliment. Hence many of us hav decided not to become the
    testing labs for design mfrs of cars.:)

    Still other things worked out well. Since the early 60's was the issue
    that is still a descusion on religion... 'seat belts'!:)

206.6Same guy ??HELIX::SONTAKKEFri Apr 25 1997 13:512
    Who was that guy who took over Fiat distribution and sold them in U.S. as
    Briklin X/19 for a while? Malcom Bricklin??
206.7Good ole Mal bricklin has done his shareDELNI::CARTERFri Apr 25 1997 14:2718
    The FIAT X/19 was later sold as the Bertone 19 or X19 after FIAT ceased
    distribution of it in the US.

    Mal Bricklin does has a checkered history in the US auto marketplace
    though.

    He imported and distributed the Subaru 360 toys in 1966/67.
    He is reputed to has distributed Panhards from france for a while.
    He allowed the Canadian and provincial governments in Canada to largely
    bankroll his Bricklin SV (safety vehicle)
    After the demise of the bricklin auto he formed a consortium and attempted
    to import a mongrel from Indonesia, but failed in that endeavour.

    He has clearly left a mark or blotch on the US automobile scene.

    	An optimist is a Yugo owner who installed a wheelie bar.

206.11Thanks for adding the Yugo to the listDELNI::CARTERFri Apr 25 1997 15:454

    Man in auto parts store: "Can I get a trailer hitch for my Yugo?"

    Auto parts clerk, after a pause: "Yeah, that'd be a fair trade."
