1426.0. "Wind of Change in our churches." by GVPROD::MEYER (Nick, DTN 7-821-4172) Thu Mar 27 1997 02:39
In the latest Newsweek, the front cover article is on prayer. The
statistics quoted on how many percent of the population in the USA
pray & believe their prayers are answered are truly astonishing,
viewed as a European.
In Europe we have more & more dwindling congregations & where our
state run church funding is in serious financial difficulties
eg: Parish priest's pensions in UK, or in Geneva where the Eglise
Nationale Protestante has to cut back on/retire 175 pastors.
There a many small & large parish church buildings in UK being
converted to business offices, or even into gyms!
It boggles the mind, how our two continents are so different.
On Monday our local daily, the Tribune de Geneve had a two page spread
on churches in Geneva. On how there were now some 40 different churches
in town, and supposedly we have become the capital for sects, where
supposedly there are 60 of them established here. Frightening stuff
indeed.
de Colores,
Nick
PS: If you want the actual figures, I have them at home & can enter
them.
