My customer who is running OpenVMS/HANZI 6.2 and RDB/HANZI on AlphaServers now. They would like to be able to use "Traditional Chinese" character set due to the company has expanded to Taiwan and Malaysia. Question : 1. Is it possible for their OpenVMS/HANZI to support Traditional Chinese (at least able to print in traditional form) ? 2. If the answer for 1 is no, what is the best alternative ? (plse don't advise them to go for SUN) 3. Is LPS32 supported by DCPS/HANZI ? Thanks, MK Tan, DEC Singapore

RE: -1 I assume that your customer would like to have a system which can support both Traditional and Simplified Chinese character concurrently. Q1: Does not support. Q2: I would like to suggest that you could ask the customer to set up a separate system for supporting Traditional Chinese character to serve Taiwan and Malaysia. We have a series of products support Traditional Chinese character as same as Simplicity Chinese character support. Q3: Does not support LPS32. For details, please refer Note 414.1. - Chris
415.2 | Or utility for conversion ? | ZPOVC::MONGKIA | Thu Apr 03 1997 13:02 | 15
Chan, Thanks for the prompt reply. With Hong Kong returning back to Mainland real soon, I am sure there are many such demands for the support of both Simplified and Traditional Chinese characteres. Perhaps we should come out with utility in either VMS/HANZI or VMS/HANYU to convert Traditional to Simplified characters and vice versa ? The TwinBridge software on PC's way of handling both character sets is what many Chinese users are looking for. Hope that someone is still interested to enhance our Asian products. Thanks and best regards, MK Tan

At the very least your customer should not go to SUN since DIGITAL UNIX provides the support you need plus more! :-) wendy UNIX Engineering/I18N Technical Director |
