3875.0. "UCX vs DECnet performance (INETDRIVER, SYBASE appli.)?" by ORAREP::PRSSOS::DIETZ (Pierre-Etienne DIETZ, Support/France) Fri Mar 28 1997 12:59

Problem: A SYBASE application, on an ALPHA 2100A, is running at
least 4 to 10 times slower with UCX than with DECnet.
(It's being ported from a RDB application on a VAX 7000).
         *** cross-posted in LASSIE::UCX and in SYBASE ***
In example:
          +------------------------------------------+ Client transactions:
Config : ! DataBase Server Cobol Client <---- Reads 4500 lines
-------- ! SYBASE V11.0.2 ! ! from a file
          !         !    <- SRI QIO$ ->     !        !  => 4 to 5 SQL requests
! INETDRIVER INETDRIVER ! by line
          !         !                       !        !  => ~20000 requests
          !         !----<--        --->----!        !
          ! UCX V4.1 !
          ! VMS 6.2 !
          ! Alpha 2100A Biprocessor !
          +------------------------------------------+
  Performance figures: Batch Elapsed Time:
DECnet => ~10 SQL requests /sec (completion in 5 minutes)
UCX => ~0.5 SQL request /sec (completion in 60 minutes)!!!
                                                             ===========
- Tests also run on a similar configuration, with similar results:
    SYBASE V10.0.2
    UCX V4.0 ECO 3
    AS 2100A

Analysis : the following has been checked:
---------

o The client process is running ...
(If UCX) 50% of its time in Kernel Mode (pretty high)
(if DECnet) 25% of its time in Kernel Mode (~normal)
o UCX proto TCP quota increase (4K -> 32K) does not improve the link.
o No MBUF Waits or Drops.
o No Device_socket "SEND" Buffer or I/O waits

Questions:
---------
- INETDRIVER Setup: Yet the QIOs done on the INETDRIVER have to be run
a second time on the BGDRIVER, is there some tuning available?
- Kernel Mode activity: Is that level of Kernel Mode reduceable?
- Any other reference of such an application with good performances,
in order to compare with that one?

Thanks a lot for any advice, best regards
Pierre-Etienne

3875.1is there a question in here someplace?DUCATI::LASTOVICAIs it possible to be totally partial?Fri Mar 28 1997 13:234
While we are certainly saddened and disappointed that an application
is being converted from Rdb to something like SYBASE and that the performance
isn't as good, what does this actually have to do with Oracle Rdb SQL
(other than making it look good, I suppose)?
3875.2OK, just in case it rings bells to somebody...ORAREP::PRSSOS::DIETZPierre-Etienne DIETZ, Support/FranceTue Apr 01 1997 06:0916

      Hello,

You are right, it's probably not the right place, but you know, as I'm
only a poor worker on TCP/IP protocols... and in order to reach the ears
of my SQL, VIA, ... colleagues, I thought useful to try this Conference,
hoping that someboby, somewhere had already seen such an issue.
Thanks anyway for your answer ;-).

Best regards,
Pierre-Etienne

Oracle Extends `Sybase Swap' Program Through May 31 For
Painless Migration From Sybase To Oracle

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp today
    announced an
extension to its successful "Sybase Swap" program through May 31,
    designed to offer concerned
Sybase customers a safe and painless migration of their
    mission-critical data to Oracle's leading
database, application and Internet software environment. The program
    provides incentives to ease
the process of migration including product discounts, rebates on Sybase
    purchases, simplified
payment schedules, migration tools and Oracle Consulting Services, the
    corporation's professional
consulting division which rounds out Oracle's unique full-solution
    offering. Oracle's product
offerings include the industry-leading Oracle(R) Universal Server,
    Developer/2000(TM) and
Designer/2000(TM) toolsets, and Oracle Transparent Gateway(R)
    technology for Sybase.

Many Sybase customers and partners have recently switched to Oracle
    because of concerns over
the longevity of their database provider, as well as product
    performance and scalability. The
Sybase Swap program provides a significant opportunity to migrate
    highly valued information to
the industry's fast and feature-rich database software with minimal
    work, low cost and
    considerable reductions in risk.

Oracle has developed effective and quick migration programs which will
    assist customers
participating in this program. Oracle Consulting Services' Advanced
    Conversion Technology
(ACT) practice has developed a Migration Methodology, which consists of
    integrated
documentation and deliverables that enable a successful and predictable
    conversion process.
Oracle Consulting Services' ACT practice can provide custom consulting,
    sizing and performance
tuning for the converted application. In addition, Oracle Design and
    Migration Services has created
a specialized toolset to help automate the migration of Sybase schema,
    data, triggers and stored
procedures to the trusted Oracle environment.

"One of the most crucial assets for many organizations is the vast
    amount of information stored
and managed on their database," said Mark Jarvis, vice president of
    marketing for Server
Technologies at Oracle Corporation. "These customers therefore demand
    technology leadership,
stability and vision from their database provider. Over the past 20
    years, Oracle has continued to
prove itself to be the best investment for customers to ensure the
    long-term success of their
    information technology strategies."

Oracle's comprehensive group of products and services enables Sybase
    customers to leverage
their existing systems while minimizing risk during migration to the
    Oracle environment.
Oracle(R) Universal Server, the industry's best selling database
    software, provides the stable,
secure platform that delivers unparalleled scalability and the ability
    to manage multiple data types
while powering customized or proprietary applications. Oracle
    Transparent Gateway for Sybase
allows data stored in a Sybase database to be easily integrated into an
    Oracle database, allowing
a customer's applications to access Sybase data as easily as if the
data were stored in an Oracle
    database.

The Designer/2000 tool allows the Sybase customer to model current
    Sybase database and
PowerBuilder applications and quickly regenerate them as Developer/2000
    applications, taking full
advantage of features in the Oracle database. Applications can also be
    simultaneously generated
as cartridges to plug into Oracle's Network Computing Architecture(TM)
    (NCA), making them
immediately available to any Network Computer, PC or other client
    device over the Web or
    existing client/server environments.

Once the database is successfully migrated to Oracle(R) Universal
    Server, clients can continue to
work with Oracle Consulting Services to re-engineer or enhance the
    system. Oracle Consulting
Services provides a full spectrum of services including new technology
    areas such as electronic
commerce, intranets, Web-based applications, Oracle Application
    implementation, custom
development, data warehousing, business consulting and program
    management.

Thanks Kathy (? that's the givenname provided by ELF)

And sorry for answering so late, I was absent from the office:
I will forward your interesting paper to my (bank) customer.

And I am happy to signal that we have found a way to a large
improvement, by using the UCX TCP LOOPBACK mode:
$ UCX Set Proto TCP /LOOPBACK

For any details on our tests, read the LASSIE::UCX Note # 5389.3
showing that the 1 hour test is now running in ~5 minutes, around
  as fast as DECnet.

Thanks again and best regards,
Pierre-Etienne

Steve is an Oracle employee, I don't think ELF will locate us :-)

LASSIE is on the Digital network, how about reposting the note so the rest of
us can see? How did you reduce the test to 5 minutes?
