7456.0. "Starion 200 needs a new brain. What do we use?" by BSS::PROCTOR_R (PC....Politically Corrupt) Thu May 29 1997 13:07

    hi:
    I looked around and didn't see an answer so will ask here:

    I (foolishly?) talked a friend into a Starion 200 'way back when, based
    largely on the premise of available technology, with the promise of
    upgrade if and when the PC ran out of steam.

    I believe the PC has an AMD 486/66 MHz CPU in it...?...

    As might be expected, the PC now is *extremely* slow when doing Win3.1
    Visio, MS Access, and related "heavy" computing activity. One might
    say that today's Pigware has caused the PC to become steamless..

    Cleverly realizing this steamless condition, I suggested that we take
    the AMD CPU out, and replace it with....

    		what?

    ? Intel (our former buddies, now legal adversaries) Upgrade page has
      nada.

    ? the home web page for PCs (ours) has nada.

    ? has anyone ever upgraded an AMD CPU on one of these? with what?

    if no one ever has, how about possible replacements?

    thanks in advance..

    re: BSS::PROCTOR_R

    Perhaps the machine just needs more memory. I find 486/66 machines
    quite adequate when loaded with 16MB or more memory for single tasks.
    I've run 486's with as much as 32MB. Worked quite well.

    YMMV.

7456.2Check out the WEB pagePCBUOA::GKELLEYMon Jun 02 1997 17:169
    If you visit the PCBU Support Home page (HTTP://PCBU.AKO.DEC.COM), you
    can find the upgrade information under the Venturis 4xxx topic (in the
    techtips). The Starion 200/300 uses the same motherboard as the
    Venturis 4xxx and has been tested with the chips listed.

7456.3Muchas Gracias..BSS::PROCTOR_RPC....Politically CorruptMon Jun 02 1997 17:3810
    I am adding memory to the box, (16MB), and will look at the upgrade
    info.

    thank you *very* much for the info.

    you folk are the unknown heroes (I suppose we'll have to include Mizter
    Linn in this bunch) of support geeks that keeps we field weenies
    afloat...

7456.4Make sure you get the correct voltagePCBUOA::GKELLEYMon Jun 02 1997 17:443
    This MLB also is a +5 volt CPU, not the newer 3.3 volt.

7456.5hmmmm... do I choose THIS one, or THIS one?BSS::PROCTOR_RPC....Politically CorruptMon Jun 02 1997 22:3013
    um.... not to be an idiot, but when I go to install the chip (an 83MHz
    Pentium at some future time, when the buddy gets the $$$ in place),
    switchpacks and jumpers are listed for two Venturis ((Venturii?)
    machines: Venturis 4XXX (54-23580)  and Venturis 4XXX (54-25054). both
    have different switchpacks and jumpers listed. Which machine do I
    cast my fate with?

    humbly yours, (in advance)

    .bob.

7456.6Look in the User GuidePCBUOA::GKELLEYTue Jun 03 1997 10:074
    The Starion User Guide has the jumper settings for the Starion 200 in
    Appendix A. The Starion used the 54-23580 MLB design.
