7446.0. "Venturis FX and 3Com PCI card problems" by TIMAMD::LJFERNANDEZ () Tue May 20 1997 08:51

Hello!

I have a customer with ten Venturis FX 5133 and he wants to install a board
3Com XL Combo PCI in everyone,but he has seen that if he puts the board in the
lower PCI slot (slot 2 i think) the system knows the board with diagnostics
diskettes (MS-DOS based) but WIN95 (preinstalled) doesn`t see it.

If the 3Com board is connected to the other PCI slot (upper PCI slot) WIN95
see the board and works fine.

I have connected a DE435 to both PCI slots and WIN95 sees it ok in both.

This happens in all the Venturis and with more than one 3Com boards and these
boards works fine in other PCs (noDEC).

Wath is the difference between PCI slot 1 and 2 ?

Is there any known incompatibility between 3Com XL Combo PCI board and upper
PCI slot on Venturis FX ??

Phoenix Bios 4.05
Digital Venturis V1.09

3Com    IRQ11
	I/O=EC40,EC7F
DE435 IRQ10(IRQ11 IN THE OTHER SLOT)
	MEM=FEDFFC00-FEDFFC7F  (3Com board doesn`t show this)
	I/O=0880-E8FF

In SETUP:

PCI Slot 1
Default Latency Timer 	Yes
Latency Timer		0040

The same for PCI Slot 2.

Plug & Play O/S		Yes
Reset Configuration data	No
Large Disk Access Mode	DOS

Thanks in advance

7446.1Might be a driver issuePCBUOA::GKELLEYTue May 20 1997 11:5325
    There should be no differences between the slots. We have seen a
    similar problem that turned out to be a bad driver for the 3COM. Have
    you actually done the install yourself (under Win95)? What is the model
    number of the card?

    Try installing the 3com in Windows95 (should be using the drivers
    supplied on the 3COM installation diskettes).

    If this doesn't work, open a IPMT so that engineering support can look
    at the problme. If you do open a call, you'll have to supply all the
    required information:

    PC model number
    MLB part number and rev (should be 54-245xx-xx rev xxx)
    BIOS rev (latest is 1.09)
    Model and name of the 3COM (including all driver information including
    the version of the drivers, etc.)

    Any other cards installed or other software other than the FIS'ed OS.

    More information:

    We found that if you install the 3Com drivers while the card is in the
    system, the PCI configuration somehow locks that slots in the driver
    (or something). When you move the card to a different slot the
    software/hardware does not reset. To make it run in a different slot,
    un-install the drivers, move the card, then re-install the drivers.
