7442.0. "Cyrix Cx486DRx2-25/50 for DECstation325C?" by 33102::JAUNG () Tue May 13 1997 14:06

    Has anyone upgraded the DECstation325C with Cyrix Cx486DRx2-25/50 chip?
    Cyrix is not making this chip anymore but there are some used one for
    auction online. Although the price is attractive but would like to
    hear suggestions and opinions.

    Thanks in advance.

    For what this is worth:

    I tried to upgrade a 425SX with an Evergreen 75MHz upgrade.

    Four hours, 3 handsful of hair, 2 bent pins, and a cartridge in a
    square tree later I had to admit defeat.

    the 425SX remains a 425SX...

    The easiest upgrade for most of this class machine (486SX25) is to go
    with an Intel 486DX2/66. There should be no bios or compatibility
    issues.  YMMV.

    ref .1 and .2

    Thanks for quick responds. The targeted machine is DECstation325C
    from Tandy using Intel 386/25 DX chips (we have one left in the
    nearly-deserted office with 16 MB memory). Previous notes mentioned
    about upgrade DECSX20 with Intel 486DX2/50. However, this is 325
    machine and I did not see any suggestion for this box yet.

    re: .3 by 33102::JAUNG

    Oops, sorry. In .2, I didn't go back to your base note. I forgot that
    you have a 386 class processor and not the 486 class.

    I'd suggest a charitable donation to your local school or some such
    organization and picking up at least 2 generations beyond the 386.

    In all seriousness...

    ref .4.

    Thanks for suggestion:

    >>>a charitable donation to your local school or some such
    >>>organization ...

    However, filing papers for this donation (from Digital) might
    take much more time than to install one (as described in .1).
    Therefore, I'll rest the case and let this PC deceases in peace.

FWIW, I did the upgrade of a 325C using the Cyrix chip. It took about
5 minutes and has worked perfectly ever since.

I run Windows95 on it. It's a perfectly good backup machine and
allows the rest of the family to get some word processing done.
Performance running Office95 is not a problem.

    re: passing old pc's to schools and such...

    I recently read that here in Oz a lot of schools are politely declining
    the offer of 'old-pcs' as the wide range of hardware differences (XT
    through AT and clones and so forth) are giving them headaches in the
    area of maintenance.

    They are trying to standardise on a small subset of machines to try and
    keep these costs down. My local primary school use Mac's.

7442.9Upgrade 325C??PCBUOA::GKELLEYTue May 20 1997 11:247
    On the upgrade of the 325C, I thought that the system was not
    upgradeable. Is there an upgrade socket on the MLB (I've never looked
    inside one)? What are the steps required? Which Cyrix chip did you use?

    Thanks,
