7437.0. "Starion 931, Modem won't hang up" by CSC32::RUTSCHOW (Jack of all trades, master of none) Sun May 11 1997 20:10

    I have had a Starion 931 for over a year and have always had this
    problem, but it never bothered me much because I would only use the
    modem about once a day. Now I am working out of my house more it is
    getting bothersome. I have tried to figure out what's wrong but to no
    avail... The modem won't hang up the phone line... I have to go to
    the wall and unplug the line and quickly get back and connect before
    the dial tone goes away... What is setup wrong??? It has done this
    since day one.

    Modem info:

    Boco 28.8 Kbps, V.34 MV.341
    On COM2

    I check the notes file (under 931 and modem) and didn't see this
    problem. Does this ring a bell with someone???

    thanks,
    dale

7437.2have a 931?CSC32::RUTSCHOWJack of all trades, master of noneSun Jun 01 1997 01:449
    Glen,

        Thanks for all the help but due to technical difficulty I just got
    the stuff copied over and it says it's for the Starion models 910, 915,
    921, 930, 932, 940, 950 and 960.  Well I have a 931...  Will this still
    work?

    thanks,
    dale
7437.3Different sound/modemPCBUOA::GKELLEYMon Jun 02 1997 17:236
    The 931 uses a different sound card and modem. The sound card is by
    Diamond and is a standard 16-bit ESS sound card. The modem is a Boca
    28.8. The files that are used for the sound/modem are different.

7437.4931 modemPCBUOA::GKELLEYMon Jun 02 1997 17:269
    I went back over your original note and noticed that you had stated
    that you had a 931, I mis-read that part. FaxTalk is used on the other
    models. The Boca modem is a standard 28.8. If your having problems with
    it hanging up, it maybe the wiring in your house, or it may be a faulty
    modem. If you have a number of extensions in the house, try unplugging
    an extension phones and see if that helps.

    glen
7437.5Dedicated phone lineCSC32::RUTSCHOWJack of all trades, master of noneMon Jun 02 1997 23:2920
    Thanks Glen but this is a dedicated phone line... This is also a
    "newer" modem. The first one died after about 3 months, so this one is
    about a year old. It has always done it...

    thanks again, but I still have the problem... Guess I can delete all
    those files you pointed me to!!!

    This is a :
    Boca 28.8 Kbps V.34 MV.34i
    com2
    8 none 1stop
    use FIFO buffers
    (basically the defaults)
    Use error control
    use flow control
    Compress data
    Hardware (rts/cts)
    Modulation type = Standard

7437.6possible phone line problemPCBUOA::GKELLEYTue Jun 03 1997 10:1315
    Was the "hang up" problem present on the original modem and on the new
    modem? If so, it may point to a problem in the phone lines. The local
    phone company supplies the current for the phone - if the current is
    too low (generally below about 20ma), then the modem may be having
    trouble hanging up.

    The low current situation usually exhibits itself as a problem in
    establishing the initial circuit. You might want to have the phone
    company check out the local loop current (the modem is suppose to work
    correctly down to about 16ma).

    The other item is what application are you using for communications?
    Have you used any other applications that provide comm?
