| I don't think anyone in engineering has tried it, since that cpu
upgrade is not supported in any of the boxes you've mentioned. The
fact that it works on some systems is just a happy coincidence.
Not an official response by the way...

| You'll see many references in this confernece (from myself and others)
to DECpc XL 466 systems not being able to accept any "upgrade" chips...
DX4 style chips (like the Intel DX4-100, the Am5x86-P75 (486-133), etc.)
It just won't work... nobody knows exactly why... and don't expect any
engineering fixes for an unsupported upgrade for an obsolete box.
We did upgrade all our old DECpc LPv+ 33Mhz boxes to Am5X86-P75 chips
last year. (After updating the BIOS EPROMS to 1.05 from 1.01). They
work fine and added another year of use to them.

7423.3 | Thanks for the feedback | 26031::HENRY | | Mon Apr 28 1997 10:57 | 7 |
| Thanks for the responses. It backs up what I feared and at least
keeps me from wasting time trying to make it work. I'll just find
another PC for the upgrade chip. The Gainbery 586-133 chip is nice
because it has a onboard voltage sensor that allows it to be used on
most motherboards with minimal trouble. Cheap too from IEG, by comparison.

I DID get my 466 XL to accept a DX4 (non-overdrive) chip. Make
sure you use the latest BIOS, 1.23 I think. You might want to
try setting the jumper that forces the BIOS to clear all the
settings and boot up with the factory settings.

| I've only tried overdrive style configurations using Intel and AMD
chips. (All I had at the time.) With the last BIOS (1.23), it fails
miserably no matter what.
Ack!... Too bad I didn't have a standard DX4-100 to try when I cared...

7423.6 | Recycled XL 566 board works | 26031::HENRY | | Tue Apr 29 1997 10:28 | 8 |
| A bit strange but I found that the XL 566 CPU board will work in the
XL 466 box. And this board will take the INTEL 586-133 CPU upgrade.
I found one in a system being sent to salvage (the 566 had the floating
point problem). But perhaps the board itself can be ordered (upgraded)
from Field Service. (They will do upgrade replacements if the cost is
below a certain margin).

7423.7 | XL560/566 daughtercard is 5V | WKOL10::WALLACE | David Wallace, SBU Sales, @WKO | Sun May 11 1997 15:09 | 7 |
| Re. .6,
The XL 560/566 daughtercard is a 5 volt card. Perhaps the Intel
586-133 upgrade assumes a 5 volt socket?
David.
