7416.0. "MMX upgrades?" by SNOFS1::16.153.96.192::powellronald (Australia!) Thu Apr 17 1997 21:18

Can any one tell me if the Pentium MMX chips have different voltage
requirements than a Pentium of the same clock speed? IE, is an MMX
chip a straight "drop in" upgrade for a pentium machine? ( I know you
need the i440FX chip set for the MMX ).

    MMX uses 2.8 Volt and the "normal" Pentium requires 3.3 Volt.

    So you can't swap them but have to adjust the voltage.

    Don't know how that is done by DEC modules but ASUS has jumpers to
    change the voltage setting.

7416.2Do I need a new VRM?SNOFS1::16.153.96.192::powellronaldAustralia!Sun Apr 20 1997 19:317
Does this mean the Venturis FX requires a different voltage regulator
module to run the MMX cpu? The machine we wish to try out is currently
running a 166 Pentium. (Venturis' running CPU's faster than 133Mhz use
VRMs)

 Thanx,
 Ron .
7416.3Use the Overdrive version!JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecMon Apr 21 1997 14:085
    MMX-Overdrive chips have the built-in 2.8v voltage regulator with the
    same Pentium-MMX guts otherwise. 166MMX-Overdrive is $289 right now
    thru Intel-reseller (DEC) employee purchase plan.

7416.4Different regulators required for Venturis FX and FX-2RINGSS::WALESDavid from Down-UnderMon Apr 21 1997 18:386
G'Day,

	Yes, the regulators do need to be different if you are using the
non-overdrive version of the MMX CPUs.

7416.5Part Number for 2.8V (MMX) Regulator for Venturis FX / FX-2 SeriesNNTPD::"[email protected]"Frank MeladyFri May 09 1997 07:2519
I have just checked a new Venturis FX-2 166Mhz MMX Machine that
has been delivered to our Call Center.

The part number on the Regulator is 54-25300-01

So if you get anyone trying to upgrade their FX/FX-2 Series machine
to an ordinary MMX Processor (Not the MMX Overdrive) They will
need this new regulator.
