7411.0. "Venturis Classic and P166 " by LUX01::WILMS () Fri Apr 11 1997 09:19

    Plan a CPU upgrade for my Venturis F75.
    It's the one with one 2 memory sim's; I think it's called Venturis
    Clasic these days.

    Is a P166 upgrade possible or am I restricted to 133MZ ?

    Many thanks

The 166MHz OverDrive chip will work fine, once you set the CPU clock input
jumpers to 66MHz. You can even get an MMX version.

    No, Intel makes overdrive versions of pentium upgrades so that
    motherboards that don't know about higher-order clock multipliers
    can still be upgraded.

The OverDrive chips are designed to replace P75-P133 chips - they use the
"Socket 5" pin layout and, as Bill said, don't require that the motherboard
have the proper clock multiplier input. Standard chips faster than 133 use
the new "Socket 7" which has different physical and electrical characteristics.
