I have a Decstation 425c and am looking to go to a bigger disk. I recently purchused a maxtor 1.2 GB disk and am looking for assistance with getting it running on my 425c. Is this possible? It is an IDE drive. The geometry of the drive is 2448 clyinders, 16 heads, and 63 sectors. The person at the Digital servicecenter said to use 612 cylinders, 64 heads and 63 sectors. Has anybody out there had any luck with installing such a big disk on a 425c? Even if I can't see all the disk space I would still like to install it. If this is not possible is there any application I can run to allow me to see most, if not all of the drive? It seems like when you go into setup the 425 does not accept 2448 cylinders. My friend has tried to put it on his 425c and it did format fine using 612 cylinders, installed dos and windows fine. It even booted. But he took it out then put it back in and somehow the drive got corrupted. Does anybody know if this will even work and any suggestions on doing so? Thanks, Ricky

re: MCKNLY::R_SWANSON Check with Maxtor for disk manager software for their drives. Most disk vendors have them on their web sites. /Bill

Bill, Once again, thanks. I called Maxtor and they instructed me how to downline load Maxblast.exe. According to them, it will allow me to use this disk on the 425c. I will update this note after I try it in case anybody else wants to do this. Ricky

A better solution (IMHO) is to purchase a new IDE disk controller or a Disk BIOS replacement adapter. Either option costs about $40. It's a lot easier to deal if, later if you decide to use the disk in a newer system and don't need the overlay. I used the SIIG BIOS upgrade card on my LPx system using a 2.5GB WD disk. Works fine, no overlay software involved. If you want to use the disk without MAXBLAST, you have to reformat the disk... Regards, Tom |
