7387.0. "Amd 5x86 CPU in LPx+" by VAXRIO::CUPOLILLO () Mon Mar 17 1997 12:56

        Hi,

One of our customers decided to upgrade their old DECpc LPx+, so
they bought, from a third-party, a bunch of Amd 5x86-133 CPUs and re-
gulators boards. At a first look every thing seens to work well, but
the machines are not able to boot from floppy.

I presume that the problem is releated to the internal CACHE of the
CPU, as if we disable the internal CACHE the machines work ok. None of
the systems have secondary level CACHEs.

Does this kind of upgrade worth any thing? Is it really supported
    by the LPXx+ machines?

        Thanks,

        Cupol

I've seen this general problem reported a lot, and it's not just Digital's
PCs. Some PCs it works on, some it doesn't. No, it's not "supported".

I'll second the fact that these cpu upgrades are NOT SUPPORTED.

I'm probably going to look into these for my own home machine. I've
heard that the upgrades are not all created equal, even if they use the
same chip. Some are more easily configured than others. I think it is
a roll of the dice if the upgrades work in any given machine.

I (unfortunately think that you gets your choice of Intel or Intel to
upgrade... check www.intel.com to see if the machine has been
    "approved" by Intel for upgrading.

this chip. he has used it on many brand pc including Digital and says
    it has always worked.

Some of these upgrades have NO JUMPERS, and some have 2 or 3 jumpers.
They usually are all cache related (write-back vs. write thru, enable
    and disable, and size)

They are definitely trial-and-error upgrades. Some will work, some
    won't.
