7380.0. "128MB in Celebris?" by KAOFS::R_RYAN (I used to be a coyote but Im ok nowoooo!) Thu Mar 13 1997 11:16

Has anyone heard of a problem with Celebris PCs (842WW) where you are
unable to install 128Megs of 60ns EDO RAM ie: 4 x 32MB 32 bit RAM?
Three of these 32 MB SIMMs would work, the fourth would fail. The
system will not come up, even to the BIOS update screen. I had the
local tech obtain 4 of OUR 32 MB SIMMS and he reported the following:

I obtained qty 4 32-MB memory SIMMs from logistics (54-21277-EA ME654-DE).
The memory SIMMs from logistics work ok in all configurations including
4x32=128MB. The SIMMs are non-parity 70ns.

The customer's memory was 60 ns, possibly EDO (how can we tell?).

I returned the PC to the customer, with the results.

It seems that the Celebris FP590 will work only with non-EDO memory to reach
128MB. Is it possible to verify this?

In the meanwhile, the customer will try to obtain non-EDO 32MB memory SIMMs
to see if it resolves his problem.

Why are you installing EDO memory in a system that doesn't support it? The
FP590 takes parity or non-parity FPM 70ns memory. If you put something else
in it, and it doesn't work, don't complain to Digital.

Excuse me. The documentation I saw stated 70ns or better memory. It did
not state that 60ns RAM would fail. AND I WAS NOT COMPLAINING!!
    Thanks,
    Ron

The issue isn't 70 vs 60 ns memory, it's EDO vs. FPM memory.
The 590 takes FPM memory, not EDO memory.

    1) All simms in the system should be of the same type and speed
and used in matched pairs. (dont mix edo/non or 60ns with 70ns)

    2) If the above is true for your system, then make sure that
the sims arte digital qualified simms for that system. all of them.

128M should not be an issue
