7373.0. "Does the Starion 932 series suffer the same Hard Drive failures as the 930 series?" by AWECIM::SEGAL () Thu Mar 06 1997 11:32

I have a Starion 932, with the standard 1.2 Gig hard drive from the factory.
Three of my co-workers have Starion 930's and each one has had to replace the
hard drive. I heard that this problem was pretty common and went away when
Digital started shipping the 1.6 Gig drives, as standard.

My PC is currently working just fine, but, I'm concerned that the drive is
likely to fail. Since the disk in the 930 is the same size in the 932, I was
wondering if anyone knew if the hard drive problem had been caught by the time
the 932's shipped?

I'm hoping a different drive was substituted...

Thanks,
   Meir

Well my 1.6 in my 942 went bad after 5 months.... was replaced with
a Quantum 2.1 by Digital - so far so good....

So, any type drive can go bad!

    I had a 930 that lost it's 1.2 Gb drive as well.....heard that there
were quality issues with the drive - the reason DEC changed to the
    1.6gb drive....

I'd push for replacement while your warranty is valid...

It's more likely that 1.6GB drives became more commonplace and cost the
same as the 1.2s originally did, or the 1.2s were going EOL. The
vendors are forever changing their drives and coming out with new ones.

Hard to second guess, and as one other reply said, any one's drive can
    fail.

7373.4I'd replace it, given the history...SMURF::STRANGESteve Strange, UNIX FilesystemsThu Mar 06 1997 18:1518
    re: last few

Yes, anyone's drive can fail. But so many people have had trouble with
the 1.2 in the Starion 930s (I too had it go bad), that clearly this
model or batch of drives had quality control problems. I believe it
    was a Conner drive.

My recommendation -- if you have one of these, and it hasn't failed,
do push for a replacement. The problem is even if you get a
replacement, you have to deal with moving your stuff over two the new
drive. So you might consider buying a second drive, installing it,
moving your primary boot stuff (C:) to the new drive, then pushing for
a replacement of the original. This also gives you the opportunity to
partition things nicely, and if you're like me, you needed the extra
space anyway. 2.1GB drives are not much more than $200 these days, you
can probably get a 1.2 for a bit over $100. Just my 2 cents.

7373.5So many failures... so little time...AWECIM::SEGALMon Mar 10 1997 16:438
RE: last 3 replies.

Thanks for the feedback. I particularly like the last idea. I was running out of space
anyway, so that seems like a great way to kill two birds with one stone.

Off shortly to the service center...

It is true that some starion systems had hard drive failures.

THIS IS WHY SYSTEMS HAVE WARRENTEES. If the hard drive fails
during warrentee, it will be replaced. Trying to get a new hard
drive for free, while yours is still working because "you heard they
had problems" won't cut it. Sorry. If wanted an extented warrentee,
    you could have bought one.

It seems to me that if the vendor *knows* there is a problem with the hard
drive, that they have a certain amount of responsibility to proactively replace
them.

I would tend to agree with you, Scott, but we have not established that
    there is a problem.

    http://www.jncs.com/pages/drives.htm lists the seagate 2.1G at $232.
Local computer shows have had them for closer to $200.
