7367.0. "ASTEC Power Supply-High failure rate" by KAOFS::R_RYAN (I used to be a coyote but Im ok nowoooo!) Mon Mar 03 1997 12:31

I was searching for information on the ASTEC 30-41069-01 Power Supply.
We have a site with 25 780WW PCs in which these power supplies end up
swapped at least once a year. The failure usually occurs on powerup and
is due to the loss of 5 volts. My search on the net revealed that the
30-41069-01 has been known to have some problems and should be replaced
    with a 30-41069-02.
Has anyone else heard of these problems? Is the exact problem with the
30-41069-01 detailed anywhere? The customer wants to know what the
difference between these two supplies is.
    Regards,
    Ron

I swap a lot of those as well. The -02 variant has (at least on the
ones I have seen) bigger chokes, which makes installation a bit more
difficult. I believe the Prioris XL has the -02 variant as default, but
I have swapped some of those as well.

The typical symptom is momentary lights, but then it's all gone. No
fans and the drives never spin up. Is that what you have also seen?

I think in the cases we have seen that the 12v for the drives etc are
still there. It's only the 5 volts that goes.
The bigger chokes may help make the supply more robust. We'll see.
    Thanks and regards,

7367.3Check with Kanata for answersKAOFS::C_MENENDEZCARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862Tue Mar 11 1997 15:1716

I'm by no means a design guru, but IMO the chokes do nothing to
make the power supply more stable. I would think they have more to do
with protectin the other PC components from noise or RF or something
    like that.

Perhaps you might want to give Kanata a call and try to find an
explanation for both (high failure and the purpose of these chokes).

Let me tell you one thing. These damn chokes make the installation
of these power supplies almost impossible on the regular XL line of
pcs. I don't know if the -02 variant is supposed to be used on XLs, but
    that's what logo sent me....
