7345.0. "MMX Overdrive capable?" by SNLV01::LEE () Mon Feb 10 1997 04:48

    Are any of our PCs capable of being upgraded to the Intel Pentium
        OverDrive processor with MMX technology?

        Thanks,
        Bernard

    The only PC's that have the new voltage regulator required is the
    Venturis FX and Celebris FX.

Has Intel announced an "MMX Overdrive" chip? I haven't heard of such a
thing.

7345.3MMX-OEM is DIFFERENT than MMX-Overdrive. No Voltage issues!JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecMon Feb 10 1997 15:2815
    RE: -last few.

    I think we are mixing mistakes...

    The MMX OEM chips announced now, require BIOS updates and Voltage
    regulators. I think the PCBU has not produced any previous machines
    that will support the native MMX-OEM chip. They have a current set of
    offerings that COME with the MMX chip, but no retrofit for the OEM
    chip in older DEC machines due to Voltage regulator missing.

    The MMX-OVERDRIVE chips due to be announced in April97 will work in 90%
    of all current P-100 compatible motherboards, WITHOUT the need for BIOS
    or Voltage Regulator changes. (This according to Intel)

7345.4MMX and Venturis FXPCBUOA::GKELLEYTue Feb 11 1997 13:136
    The Venturis FX and Celebris FX are both tested to use the MMX. To use
    the MMX you need the latest BIOS (1.09) and a new regulator card. We
    started shipping a Celebris FX that includes the MMX about 1 week ago.
    We have no plans to offer upgrades to the MMX.

    When the MMX overdrive chips become available from Intel, where can the
    customers get the regulator boards for the Venturis FX and Celebris FX?

7345.6Different regulator not required for MMX OverdriveRINGSS::WALESDavid from Down-UnderWed Feb 12 1997 15:4411
G'Day,

	My understanding is that the Overdrive version of the MMX CPUs wont
require a different regulator. You simply swap the existing CPU for the new
one. Considering the likely cost of the MMX CPU I doubt that this kind of
upgrade would be worth it.

	There are no plans (at least in Australia) for us to sell regulators so
customers can use the real MMX CPUs for upgrades.

David.
7345.7Right you are, Johnny... Tell them what they've won...JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecWed Feb 12 1997 18:0715
    re: .last few

    Right you are. The Overdrive chips will be drop-in replacements for the
    current Pentium-classic based machines. In all but a few cases, anything
    running standard Pentium 90,100 or 133's will be drop-in compatible
    with the MMX overdrive.

    (The only reason I could see is if you have a 90 or 100mhz P-classic
    today and are actually looking for more juice. The $275 for the
    overdrive 166MMX chip might actually be a good avenue in May/June. I
    can't imagine going from a P-133, P-166 or P-200 to a new
    P-166MMX or P-200MMX UNLESS you are a Adobe Photoshop professional.
    Save your money otherwise.)

	Now if we could just find a part number internally for
	the Overdrive chips.... (Don't have to be MMX. We have
	some Pentium 100's we'd love to upgrade)

    Don't know much about overdrive chips but take a look at the
    DT-A0001-xx part numbers (-RQ,-SZ,-SY,-VT,-UV). This might be what you
    are looking for

    The 166mhz upgrade is DT-A0001-UV.
