    [Call me dogmatic, but . . .]

    Can I replace the motherboard in my VenturisFP 450s2 with a clone
    motherboard like I see advertised in PC Week? If not, do we sell
    motherboards to upgrade a VenturisFP 450s2 to a Pentium?

    Thanks!

5307.9VenturisFP and PentiumPCBUOA::GKELLEYTue Feb 25 1997 09:1618
    The Venturis FP uses a non-standard layout. The normal layout for 486
    boxes use to be called the Western Digital LPX format (this was a size
    and connector placement layout). The FP chassis is slightly different
    in the area of the mouse and keyboard placement. If you moved the
    mouse/keyboard connectors slightly to the right, you would have the LPX
    form.

    The 486 version of the Venturis is upgradeable to the Pentium by using
    the Intel Overdrive processor. The 5V version comes in two flavors:
    63Mhz and 83Mhz. The User Manual also has infomration about the jumper
    settings for the different versions of CPUs. In the VenturisFP, the 486
    chip was either an Intel or AMD. If the AMD was installed and you put
    in an Intel Overdrive upgrade, you'll have to change the jumpers to
    Intel position.

And you can get the Pentium 83 overdrive at $129 (+tax) directly from
Intel.

Check note 1505.* in the PC 95 notes file.

    Re .9, thanks very much for the information. Yep, I could put in the
    83 Mhz Overdrive. But I would like to get a real Pentium motherboard
    in there, as I could take advantage of the falling Pentium prices for
    the next few years.

    So, could I swap my VenturisFP 450s2 motherboard with a VenturiFP
    Peintium motherboard?

    Thanks!

5307.12Venturis MLB layoutPCBUOA::GKELLEYThu Feb 27 1997 16:048
    Since the Venturis FP Pentium used the same chassis, you should be able
    to use one of the old Pentium MLBs. The one used in the low end was
    called Palomino (Venturis FP5100). I believe that you could also use
    one the Celebris models. You'd have to get these from some source as
    Digital no longer manufactures these.

    regards,
    glen kelley

    Neat. If I could get one for $100-200, that would be a cost-effective
    way to upgrade my system (without CPU, of course). If this MLB would
    cost me $1000, it would cheaper to sell my current system, and buy new.

    Thoughts on this?

    Thanks!

    re: CRONIC::LEMONS

    tl,

    I think common wisdom has it that upgrades of the type you are
    contemplating are futile. You're better off taking the plunge
    here and now and getting a "standard" PC clone case and power
    supply and avail yourself of the many motherboard choices on
    the market. Try going to a PC show sometime to see what's out
    there.

    Sell your system intact to recoup some of the cost of the new system.

    $.02,
